How to Find the Best ADHD Coach in Perth

Not all ADHD coaches are the same. Here's what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to find the right fit for you in Perth or online.

If you're looking for an ADHD coach in Perth, you've probably already discovered that the options aren't always obvious. ADHD coaching is a relatively young field, and the quality and approach varies significantly between practitioners. Knowing what to look for makes a real difference.

What Is an ADHD Coach, Exactly?

An ADHD coach is a professional who works with people with ADHD (or ADHD traits) to develop practical strategies for managing executive function challenges — things like time management, task initiation, organisation, and follow-through.

Coaching is distinct from therapy. Therapy typically explores the emotional and psychological roots of difficulties and is delivered by a registered mental health professional. Coaching is present- and future-focused, skills-based, and doesn't require a mental health registration. Both can be valuable, and many people benefit from both.

What to Look for in an ADHD Coach

Specific ADHD training and experience. General life coaching is not the same as ADHD coaching. Look for someone who has specific training in ADHD — ideally through a recognised body like the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the ADHD Coaches Organisation (ACO) — and who works with ADHD clients regularly.

A neuro-affirming approach. Good ADHD coaching doesn't treat ADHD as a problem to be fixed or a set of deficits to be overcome. It works with how your brain actually functions, building on strengths and developing strategies that fit your specific neurology. If a coach's approach feels shaming or deficit-focused, that's a red flag.

Relevant background. Many effective ADHD coaches come from backgrounds in education, psychology, or allied health. This isn't essential, but it can be a useful indicator of depth of understanding.

A good personal fit. Coaching is a collaborative relationship. You need to feel comfortable being honest with your coach, and you need to trust that they understand your experience. Most coaches offer an initial consultation — use it to assess the fit, not just the credentials.

Questions to Ask a Potential ADHD Coach

  • What specific training do you have in ADHD coaching?
  • What does a typical coaching session look like?
  • How do you approach goal-setting and accountability?
  • Have you worked with clients in similar situations to mine?
  • What's your approach when strategies aren't working?
  • Do you offer in-person sessions, online sessions, or both?

Perth-Based vs. Online Coaching

One of the advantages of the shift to online coaching is that you're no longer limited to practitioners in your immediate area. Many excellent ADHD coaches work entirely online, and research suggests that online coaching is just as effective as in-person for most people.

That said, some people genuinely prefer in-person sessions — the physical presence of another person can help with focus and accountability. If that's you, it's worth looking for someone based in Perth.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Coaches who promise quick fixes or dramatic transformations
  • Lack of specific ADHD training or experience
  • A one-size-fits-all approach that doesn't account for individual differences
  • Pressure to commit to long-term packages before you've had a chance to assess the fit
  • An approach that feels judgmental or shame-inducing

A Note on Cost and Funding

ADHD coaching is not currently covered by Medicare in Australia. However, working adults with ADHD may be eligible for funded coaching through the JobAccess Employment Assistance Fund (EAF). If you're employed and your ADHD affects your work, it's worth checking your eligibility.

Finding the right ADHD coach takes a little research, but it's worth the effort. The right fit can make a significant difference to how you manage your day-to-day life.
