Lying awake with a racing mind, struggling to wind down, waking up exhausted — sleep problems are extremely common in ADHD. Here's what's going on and what helps.
If you have ADHD, there's a good chance you also have a complicated relationship with sleep. Difficulty falling asleep, a racing mind at bedtime, waking in the night, and struggling to get up in the morning are all extremely common in ADHD — and they're not just a side effect of stress or bad habits.
Why ADHD and Sleep Don't Mix Well
Several features of ADHD directly interfere with sleep:
Delayed sleep phase. Many people with ADHD have a naturally delayed circadian rhythm — their body clock runs later than average. This means they don't feel sleepy until late at night, and struggle to wake up at conventional times. This isn't laziness or poor discipline. It's a biological difference.
Difficulty transitioning to sleep. The same executive function challenges that make it hard to start tasks during the day also make it hard to stop them at night. Transitioning from "active" to "winding down" requires the kind of self-regulation that ADHD makes difficult.
Racing thoughts at bedtime. When the stimulation of the day drops away, ADHD brains often become more active, not less. Thoughts race, ideas emerge, worries surface. This is partly because the day's distractions are no longer providing the stimulation that keeps the brain occupied.
Hyperfocus at night. The evening hours are often when ADHD brains hit their stride — the house is quiet, there are fewer demands, and the brain finally has the conditions it needs to focus. This can lead to staying up far too late, absorbed in a project or a screen.
Medication effects. Stimulant medications for ADHD can interfere with sleep if taken too late in the day, or cause a "rebound" effect as they wear off.
The Consequences of Poor Sleep
Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired. For people with ADHD, it significantly worsens the core symptoms — attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and executive function all deteriorate with sleep deprivation. This creates a vicious cycle: ADHD makes sleep harder, and poor sleep makes ADHD worse.
What Helps
Consistent sleep and wake times. This is the single most evidence-based intervention for sleep problems. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day — including weekends — helps regulate the circadian rhythm over time. It's hard to establish, but the payoff is significant.
A wind-down routine. Give your brain a consistent signal that sleep is coming. This might be a warm shower, reading, gentle stretching, or a specific playlist. The content matters less than the consistency — the routine itself becomes the cue.
Reduce screen exposure in the evening. Blue light from screens suppresses melatonin production and delays sleep onset. More importantly, the stimulating content of social media and news activates the brain's arousal systems. Aim to reduce screen use in the hour before bed.
Address the racing mind. If your brain becomes active when you lie down, give it somewhere to go. A brief brain dump — writing down everything on your mind before bed — can help. Some people find a specific relaxation practice (body scan, breathing exercises) useful. Others find that low-stimulation audio (podcasts, audiobooks) gives the brain just enough to focus on without activating it further.
Talk to your GP. If sleep problems are significantly affecting your functioning, it's worth discussing with your doctor. There are medical options — including melatonin, which is available by prescription in Australia — that can help with sleep onset. If you're on stimulant medication, the timing and dose may also be worth reviewing.
Sleep is foundational. Almost everything else — focus, mood, energy, relationships — is harder when you're not sleeping well. It's worth treating it as a priority, not an afterthought.
